Mark Your
Calendar! National MooFest to Highlight Importance of Dairy Industry
Historical and educational activities illustrate dairy’s economic
role within the community
Athens, Tenn. (Nov. 6, 2007) – Mark
your calendar for May 31, 2008 as one of Tennessee’s most historic
towns gears up to celebrate the first National MooFest. The folks of
McMinn County invite you to a fun-filled day of historical and
educational activities that highlight the important role the dairy
industry plays within the community.
From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., civic organizations, government agencies and
churches, among other local groups, will coordinate unique
activities in downtown Athens that demonstrate their roles in the
dairy industry during the town’s past, present and future. Crafts,
food vendors, homemade ice cream and various types of entertainment
are scheduled for the event, as well as a shuttle service to the
Mayfield Dairy Farms Visitor Center for free tours.
“Years ago, agriculture was the focal point of most rural
communities. It supported their economies, communities and politics.
MooFest will emphasize how the dairy industry contributes to Athens,
as well as to this region of Tennessee,” said John Forgety, McMinn
County Superintendent of Schools and CEO of the National MooFest
Executive Board. “MooFest is also a fun way to create public
awareness and educate the community while bringing our families
together for some good old fashioned fun.”
McMinn County has roots firmly planted in Tennessee’s agricultural
landscape. It ranks among the state’s top two counties for the
number of milk cows, and is home to Mayfield Dairy Farms, one of the
south’s most beloved milk and ice cream producers. What started as a
local family farm has evolved into a McMinn County landmark that
serves nine states and one of Tennessee’s agricultural icons. |
